Blaine is the city at the border, about 6,500 people (Census Bureau, July 2025 estimate) at the very top of I-5. The Peace Arch sits right on the line, and Blaine has two of the main West Coast crossings into Canada: Peace Arch for cars and Pacific Highway, about a mile east, which also handles truck traffic. If you cross into B.C. often, it's hard to beat.
The town sits on Drayton Harbor and Semiahmoo Bay, and the water is a big part of daily life. Blaine Harbor has a marina and Marine Park along the shoreline, Peace Arch Historical State Park has lawns and gardens on both sides of the border, and Semiahmoo Spit is known for birdwatching and long walks. Downtown along Peace Portal Drive has a turn-of-the-century theme with remodeled storefronts.
Housing is a mix of older homes in town, view homes on the hill above the harbor, and condos and newer homes out toward Semiahmoo. Birch Bay, a beach community a few miles south, is in the same school district and is worth looking at alongside Blaine. Buyers coming from Bellingham often find they can get closer to the water for less money. The trade-offs are the drive, a quieter off-season, and the winter wind. A few times a winter, cold air pours out of the Fraser Valley, and north county feels it most, so ask about a home's exposure and heat source.
Downtown Bellingham is about 25 to 30 minutes south on I-5, and BLI is about 20 to 25 minutes.
Blaine is served by the Blaine School District.
