Ferndale is the city just north of Bellingham, on the Nooksack River, with about 17,600 people (Census Bureau, July 2025 estimate). It's also where I live. I've been in Ferndale about nine years, and my drive to the office in downtown Bellingham is about 17 minutes.
The town grew up around timber, farming and dairy, and the refineries at Cherry Point and west of town have been part of the local economy since the 1950s. Today the older homes sit near downtown and Main Street by the river, and newer subdivisions spread out to the north and west. A lot of buyers find they get more house or more yard for the money here than in Bellingham. The trade-off is the commute and fewer walkable shops.
For getting outside, Hovander Homestead Park and Tennant Lake sit right along the southeast edge of town, with river trails, a historic farmhouse and barn, and the Fragrance Garden. Pioneer Park downtown has a collection of historic cedar log cabins. Lake Terrell and the beaches toward Point Whitehorn and Birch Bay are a short drive west.
Location is a big part of Ferndale's appeal. You're right on I-5, about 10 to 15 minutes from Bellingham International Airport, roughly 15 to 20 minutes from downtown Bellingham and the Bellis Fair area, and about 20 minutes from the Blaine border crossings.
Most of Ferndale is in the Ferndale School District, but a small part of the south end is in the Bellingham School District. That catches people off guard, so always check the district for a specific address.
