Lynden is about 15 miles north of Bellingham and about 5 miles south of the Canadian border, with about 16,900 people (Census Bureau, July 2025 estimate). The Nooksack River runs along the south side of town, and farmland surrounds it on every side: raspberries, blueberries, dairies and more.
Downtown Lynden centers on Front Street, with Dutch-style storefronts and the windmill that's become the town's landmark. The Lynden Heritage Museum is downtown too. The calendar is a big part of life here, including the Northwest Raspberry Festival in July, the Northwest Washington Fair every August (running since 1909), and the lighted Sinterklaas parade in December. Berthusen Park, just west of town, has wooded trails and open space.
Homes range from older houses close to Front Street to newer subdivisions on the edges of town, with farms and acreage beyond the city limits. Lynden even has a small airport, Jansen Field, with homes connected to the taxiways. One thing I always tell buyers here is to check the flood maps. Parts of the Nooksack Valley have a flooding history, and it matters for insurance and for which streets you look at.
State Route 539, the Guide Meridian, connects Lynden to Bellingham in about 25 minutes, and WTA buses run to Cordata Station. The Lynden crossing into Aldergrove, B.C. has limited hours, so check WSDOT before you go. Bellingham International Airport is about 20 to 25 minutes away.
Lynden is served by the Lynden School District. Some homes outside city limits are in neighboring districts, so check by address.
