Whatcom County is the far northwest corner of Washington State. It runs from the saltwater of Bellingham Bay and Birch Bay east to Mount Baker and the North Cascades, and north right up to the Canadian border. Bellingham is the county seat and the biggest city. Around it you'll find the smaller cities of Ferndale, Lynden, Blaine, Everson, Nooksack and Sumas, lake and beach communities like Sudden Valley and Birch Bay, and a lot of farmland, forest and water in between. Seattle is about an hour and a half south by car, and Vancouver, B.C. is about an hour north.
Bellingham has early-1900s homes on the hillsides near downtown, mid-century neighborhoods, and newer townhomes and condos on the north side. Ferndale and Lynden have more newer subdivisions, Birch Bay has beach cabins, condos and second homes, and out in the county you'll find farms, acreage and homes on wells and septic systems.
I-5 runs north and south through the county, and there are four crossings into Canada on the mainland: Peace Arch and Pacific Highway in Blaine, plus Lynden and Sumas. Bellingham International Airport (BLI) sits on the northwest side of Bellingham, Amtrak Cascades stops at Fairhaven Station, and the Mount Baker Highway (SR 542) climbs about 56 miles to the Mt. Baker Ski Area.
Outdoors, the county has about 140 miles of marine shoreline, Lake Whatcom (about 10 miles long and the drinking water source for roughly half the county), Chuckanut Drive, Larrabee and Birch Bay State Parks, and the mountain.
Seven public school districts serve the county: Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden, Blaine, Meridian, Nooksack Valley and Mount Baker. District lines don't always follow city limits, so always confirm the district for a specific address.
I've lived in Whatcom County my whole life, and since getting licensed in 2021 I've helped nearly 200 families buy and sell here. One thing I always tell people is to choose the pocket, not just the house.
